Plant Development

Through controlled plant breeding and other avenues, Yew Dell is continuing the work of Theodore Klein by constantly working to develop new plant introductions for the garden.

Baptisia Breeding
The genus Baptisia is represented by numerous species of herbaceous perennials native to the central and southern US. Their flower colors range from deep indigo through purple, occasionally pink, white and yellow. Most of these species hybridize freely in nature but their native ranges rarely overlap. Baptisias are tremendously durable garden plants, their May flower spikes adding an outstanding vertical element in any sunny garden.

Clematis Breeding
While many gardeners are familiar with the relatively common vining types, many gardeners in temperate areas are unfamiliar with the evergreen clematis vine, Clematis armandii. Yew Dell staff are hybridizing this delightful southern spring bloomer with some of the more cold hardy species and forms commonly grown in the north.

Recent introductions by Yew Dell Executive Director Dr. Paul Cappiello

Empetrum nigrum Compass Harbor is a recent introduction by Yew Dell Executive Director Dr. Paul Cappiello. This selection from the coast of Maine forms a low mat of fine-textured evergreen foliage. Needles are a brilliantly glossy deep green in summer, coloring to a rich mahogany in winter. Excellent as a rock garden or trough plant or for a groundcover in sunny, acidic, well-drained sites.

Hypericum 'CCF-LPC1' Blue Vlevet(St. Johnswort) was introduced by Dr. Cappiello and colleague John Wachter and is an outstanding new shrub for the sunny garden. Forming a densely-branched mound to 3-4’ tall and wide, the plant produces brilliant blue-green leaves and bright golden flowers in late Spring. The selection is highly disease resistant, propagates easily from cuttings and regenerates nicely from renewal pruning if desired.

Fothergilla 'Red Licorice', a fine North American native shrub was made by Dr. Cappiello and John Wachter while both were working at Bernheim Arboretum. The parent plant showed outstanding, cherry red fall foliage and sweetly-scented spring flowers. Fall color seems to develop better in north and mid latitudes. Grows well in moist soils in full sun to partial shade.
