Klein Introductions

Theodore Klein had a master’s eye for picking out great new plant varieties. Over the span of his 93 years, Klein selected and named more than 60 introductions. The most commercially successful of these have been Cercis canadensis ‘Silver Cloud’ (variegated redbud) and Cercidiphyllum japonicum ‘Amazing Grace’ (weeping katsura tree.)

Cercis canadensis 'Silver Cloud' grows like a typical redbud but provides summer-long interest with white splashed leaves. The variegation is more pronounced in cool spring and summer seasons. The original plant was one of two variegated seedlings found in a row by Klein at Yew Dell; both were mistakenly cut down late that summer and only one regrew the following spring.

Cercidiphyllum japonicum 'Amazing Grace' is a large weeping tree up to 35' tall and more tree-like than typical weeping katsuras. Fall leaves are a subdued yellow and offer a sweet scent as they drop from the plant. The selection originated as a seedling in the nursery of Jess Eliot, IN. Its name was coined by Bob Hill of Courier Journal/Hidden Hill Nursery.
