Arboretum Over the nearly 60 years that Theodore Klein planned, planted and tended the grounds of Yew Dell, he developed an extensive and widely varied collection of plants and garden styles. The arboretum contains an outstanding collection of mostly woody plants collected literally from around the corner and around the world. The collection of Fagus sylvatica (European Beech) cultivars was described by famed plantsman J.C. Raulston, as one of the very best in North America. Other noteworthy collections in the arboretum include Magnolia, Viburnum, Abies (fir), Cornus (dogwood), Cercis, (redbud), Hydrangea and Ilex (holly). |

Serpentine Garden This stunning evergreen garden, located just inside the main gate, has become one of Yew Dell's signature plantings. The garden is composed of an impressive collections of evergreens including species of Abies (fir), Picea (spruce), Pinus (pine), Taxus (yew) and Tsuga (hemlock). The collection is a stunning display of colors, textures and forms, all tied together by a ribbon of Taxus. The serpentine garden is the subject of a fabulous oil pastel created and generously donated by Louisville artist Martin Rollins for use on Yew Dell's 2005 Open House and Plant Sale poster. |

Secret Garden Flanked by Yew Dell's holly allee, the secret garden has had a long history as a place for display and testing of everythiing from dwarf conifers to peonies. Through the hard work and generosity of the Louisville Rambler Garden Club and the Principal Financial Group, this garden has experienced a rebirth as a display of more than 70 Helleborus (lenten rose), over 100 hardy ferns and numerous species and cultivars of Asarum (hardy gingers). Other companion plants in the garden include a sampling of hostas, the white-leafed Liriope 'Okina' and the majestic Cardiocrinum giganteum with massive white lily-like summer flowers held some 7 feet above the ground. |

Walled Garden Located just behind the main house, Yew Dell's walled garden is a rehabilitation project generously funded by the Glenview Garden Club. This traditionaly English walled garden is surrounded on three sides by one of Klein's signature fieldstone walls set off with a small round pool in the center of the garden space. The changing pallet of mostly herbaceous perennials includes blooms throughout the gardening season. Featured plants include Hakonechloa macra 'All Gold', Verbascum 'Carribean Crush', and the dwarf yellow-leafed oakleaf hydrangea, H. quercifolia 'Little Honey'. |
