Yew Dell Gardens is committed to offering visitors and members, the best the plant world has to offer for the nursery and garden. Through aggressive efforts in plant collection, new plant development, evaluation and display, Yew Dell works to provide valuable information and support to gardeners and nursery industry members. The links above provide detailed information on Yew Dell’s outstanding plant collections, breeding program and new plant evaluation projects as well as a listing of Theodore Klein’s plant introductions.

Name: Acer saccharum 'Powhattan'; Sugar Maple

Description: This columnar sugar maple was discovered by Theodore Klein as a witches broom on a large old sugar maple. The original plant is approximately 35' tall and 12' wide. The foliage is a deep rich green in summer, changing to a bright yellow orange in fall. It is strongly branched and holds up well to snow and ice loads. The plant is best propagated by summer or fall budding onto seedling sugar maple rootstock.

Name: Fagus sylvatica 'Tortuosa'; Contorted European Beech

Description: This specimen, propagated from the well-known old plant at the Arnold Arboretum, currently measures approximately 22' tall and almost 40' wide. Its spectacular contorted branches make for a dramatic scene, especially in winter when the leaves have fallen. The specimen is visible along N. Camden Lane.

Yew Dell's European Beech collection is among the most diverse in the region. The collection includes forms with red, green, yellow, variegated and fern-like deeply incised leaves. There are also weeping, columnar and contorted forms and just about every combination of foliage and form.

Name: Baptisia hybrids; False Indigo

Description: Yew Dell's Baptisia breeding program has combined the blood lines of B. australis (lavender flowered), B. alba (white flowered) and B. viridis (yellow flowered.) The third generation hybrids pictured to the left represent some of the tremendous variation in the seedlings. Some of the more exciting possibilities currently under evaluation include yellow foliage, bicolored forms of blue/white, yellow/purple, and pink/blue. There are several selections that produce flower spikes of more than 20" in length and are being evaluated for use as cut flowers.
