Garden Assistant

Under the direction of the Garden and Arboretum Manager the Garden Assistant helps to maintain Yew Dell’s diverse array of nationally recognized display gardens and plant collections. The Garden Assistant will work and interact with other staff, volunteers and the public in support of the institution’s guiding mission of sparking a passion for plants and gardening through accessible science and inspiring beauty.

  • Assist in the care and maintenance of Yew Dell’s display gardens and plant collections
  • In collaboration with the Garden and Arboretum Manager, plan, install and maintain seasonal garden displays and permanent plant collections
  • Train, supervise and work with volunteers and lead occasional volunteer workdays
  • Provide occasional garden tours lectures, classes and workshops
  • Assist in updating plant records, maps, and display signage
  • Assist in the implementation of sustainable pest control measures
  • Field horticulture questions and inquiries from the public
  • Assist with Yew Dell community programs and events
  • Other duties as assigned by the Garden and Arboretum Manager
  • At least three years of experience in horticulture and/or garden maintenance or other related fields
  • A passion for gardening, new plants and sharing that passion with the public
  • Ability to operate and maintain a variety of power equipment such as rotary tillers, backpack blowers, tractors, golf carts, manual transmission vehicles etc.
  • Ability to be on foot for long periods of time and lift up to 50 pounds
  • Efficient and productive work style to allow maximum efficient use of limited resources
  • Openness to and enthusiasm for learning new techniques, products and approaches
  • Ability to work well with other Yew Dell staff, board, committee members and volunteers
  • Ability to effectively lead volunteers, interns and seasonal gardeners
  • Must have or be able to obtain a Kentucky pesticide applicator license
  • Must be willing to work non-standard hours as needed
  • Must have transportation to attend meetings and various functions as required 

Office Manager

The Office Manager works closely with the Director of Finance and Operations on financial and operational matters. The Office Manager collaborates with staff to ensure smooth coordination of organizations’ day-to-day operations. The Office Managers responsibilities focus on the administrative, human resource, and support of the financial activities of the organization.

  • Prepare payroll and manage payroll system
  • Manage human resource activities and personnel records including benefit renewals of insurance, FSA, and IRA accounts
  • Manage the hiring and orientation process for new staff and interns
  • Manage insurance policies and renewals including Property, D&O, Workers’ compensation, and OSHA filings
  • Purchase office, cleaning, and event supplies
  • Manage organization’s equipment, computer, and software resources
  • Assist with Yew Dell community programs and events
  • Provide support for Finance Department
  • Other duties as assigned by the Director of Finance and Operations
  • Associate degree in Business Management, Administration or related field, Bachelor’s degree preferred
  • 5+ years of management experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal relations skills
  • Maintain confidentiality of all human resource information and systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of payroll processing and software
  • Excellent computer skills including Microsoft Office products including Word and Excel
  • Excellent knowledge of computer software and ability to research solutions to hardware and software issues
  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to thrive in a team environment

Event Staff

Under the direction of the Guest Services and Rental Coordinator the Event Staff is responsible for  assisting with the implementation of scheduled events at Yew Dell Botanical Gardens. Working with the Yew Dell Botanical Gardens team the Event Staff  will follow up and coordinate with wedding parties, event rentals and Yew Dell programs and events. The Event Staff is part of a team providing an outstanding experience to our guests.

  • Act as the primary contact during an event rental and Yew Dell sponsored events through the event set up and break down,  coordinating with other staff as needed
  • Open and close buildings and gates for event set up and break down
  • Oversee event set up, deliveries, vendor management and break down
  • Check facilities prior to the event to assure correct set up and cleanliness
  • Check facilities during and after the event to assure cleanliness and completion of the storage of event materials
  • Adjust set ups in buildings and on the grounds as needed
  • Keep grounds and facilities clean and stocked
  • Make suggestions to increase customer satisfaction while maintaining Yew Dell’s policies
  • Be present during rental set up when needed and at Yew Dell events when appropriate
  • Guest services including café and bar service
  • Ensure that all event policies are followed
  • Recommend improvements and changes to events
  • Other duties as assigned
  • Associates Degree or equivalent work experience
  • Event Coordination and or Bar experience a plus
  • Self-motivated
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds and the willingness to “roll up sleeves” to get the job done
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Ability to work in an organized and efficient manner
  • Detail oriented with commitment to accuracy

Visitor Center Associate

Under the direction of the Visitor Center Manager, the visitor Center Associate welcomes, admits, and directs guests ensuring the start of a positive visitor experience. The Visitor Center Associate processes admissions and event registrations, sells memberships and garden gift  shop merchandise. The Visitor Center Associate also provides information  regarding the grounds, special events, and other information a visitor  might need. The Visitor Center Associate is part of a team providing an outstanding experience to our guests.

  • Utilizing a PC and scanner, completes and processes cash and credit card transactions for admission, membership, merchandise sales and event registration

    Manages cash and credit card transactions in an accurate and professional manner

    Informs visitors of membership levels and benefits

    Stays current on Yew Dell Botanical Gardens events

    Maintains a clean shop and walkway through the visitor center

    Reconciles daily money and produces associated reports

    Maintains merchandise shelves as needed

    Provides information to visitors regarding Yew Dell Botanical Gardens facilities, events, and opportunities

    Opens and closes when needed

    Works with and gives guidance to volunteers

    Monitors print materials for restocking needs

    Other duties as assigned
  • Retail experience preferred
