Plant Collections

Yew Dell’s plant collections make the grounds a living museum. Our collections come from collecting activities that take our staff across Kentucky, across North America and around the world. We hunt for both locally native and exotic plants with potential for Kentucky gardens and then bring them to Yew Dell for testing. In our evaluation work we are looking for plants that perform well in our climate with a minimum of inputs. We’re looking for vigorous plants that are not invasive. And we’re looking for plants that give gardeners better options.

Plants at Yew Dell may be part of one or more formal evaluations as well as informal observations by our staff, volunteers and visitors. When we find plants we think should be more widely available, we work with nurseries around Kentucky and the US to get them into production.

We label our plants with common and scientific name, family name and geographic origin of the species to give you the basic plant information. And when our online plant database becomes available (coming soon!) you’ll be able to locate specific plants on the grounds and read about their performance history – all to help you pick the best plants for your own garden.
