It all starts with a seed!

One seed can lead to a long summer of delicious vegetables or to many years of beautiful blooms and lush foliage. Whether you’re growing crops, ornamentals, or annuals, starting from seed is a small and easy task that can yield big results.

Depending on what plants you are growing, there are different methods that work best. Some seed should be started early indoors, while others prefer to be sown directly into the garden. It is always best to follow the instructions and recommendations on your seed packet. Here at Yew Dell, we’ve already started hundreds of seeds that will later be planted in the gardens or placed in our plant market to purchase.

The BIG Bloom is our annual bulb display. We currently have 17,000 tulips and hyacinths blooming in our garden. We hope you will plan a visit to Yew Dell Botanical Gardens this spring! The BIG Bloom will bloom until early May with peak color in mid-April.

Plant spotlight: Rudbeckia maxima (Giant Coneflower)
This is one big honkin' coneflower! A basal mass of bright, blue/green foliage yields an 8-9' tall stalk with multiple yellow flowers with dark brown centers in mid to late summer. Makes a huge statement in the summer garden. Loves hot, sunny sites with dryish soil once established.

Have a problem with bugs eating your favorite garden plants? Beneficial bugs can help control your pest problem in a sustainable and more environmentally friendly way. During this class Blair Leano-Helvey, the owner and mastermind behind Idlewild Butterfly Farm & Insectarium, will get participants garden-ready for spring with a discussion about using beneficial organisms to control insect pests. Each ticket will include a beneficial bug that Blair has specifically chosen for you to use in your own garden. You will pick up your beneficial bug from Yew Dell prior to the class so that you will be ready to put your new beneficial bug knowledge to use in your garden this season. Join us to explore this fascinating look at the big little world of bugs in your garden.

Our BIGGEST online plant sale of the year is this Wednesday!

150+ plants will be added to shopyewdell.com on April 7th at 9 am.

This is the big Kahuna.

Our biggest release of the year will add approximately 150 new listings including the very coolest trees, shrubs, perennials, tropical, edibles and more. With the sun and shade perennial plant selections already available on our online Plant Market, that will mean about 400 different types of plants will be available for your shopping pleasure. These releases have been wildly popular so be sure to get online at 9 am sharp on April 7th!
