Virtual Workshop spotlight: The Dirt on Potting Mix

Saturday, March 6th 11:00 am-12:30 pm

Are all potting mixes created equally? Absolutely not!

Join Jacob Stidham, Greenhouse and Nursery Manager, for a virtual AND hands-on learning experience about what goes into a quality mix. Learn why cheaper is not better and how different mixes can be the recipe for success or disaster depending on when and how they are used. What is the deal with all of those little white balls in potting mix?! Can potting mix be reused year to year? All of this and much more will be covered. The week before the workshop you will stop by Yew Dell and pick up a take home potting mix kit that will include everything you will need to blend your own while following along with Jacob virtually.

Follow the link in our bio to register today! Ticket sales end this Friday, February 26th at noon giving participants enough time to pick up their workshop supply kit.

Unfortunately, we are closed to the public today, February 23rd. Our pathways are still covered in ice. Hopefully the sunshine will melt everything away today so we can be open later this week. Stay tuned for updates on closures tomorrow.

Nine different sketches of our pollinator meadow.

Why sketch?

From the book Discovering Nature Journaling by Leslie and Roth:
Skills fostered by nature journaling:
-Scientific and aesthetic observation
-Creative and technical writing
-Perception and analysis
-Questioning, inventiveness, synthesis
Record observations with an inquiring eye... of perceptions, and feelings about the world around you.

Swipe to see nine different interpretations of our pollinator meadow created by nine different people. They are 5 minute sketches looking at shapes and shadows, textures and patterns.

Revisit the same area…that small square in your backyard or a window view. Use materials you have… markers, graphite, pencil…even coffee. Know that what we all see will be interpreted differently by others.

@Nasa successfully lands new rover on the surface of Mars today 👏

Look! We have our own ‘Mission to Mars’ in the glass greenhouse.

Wait for it...

This is our False Cypress (Chamaecyparis) bonsai. Last month, we brought this plant into the glass greenhouse to promote our upcoming bonsai workshop on @wlky. Well, the warm greenhouse climate fooled the bonsai into thinking it’s spring and began its pollination early. The chamaecyparis is wind pollinated and the pollen from the male cones is carried to female flowers. Pretty neat stuff! #whatsinthegreenhouse
