Summer Workshop Spotlight: Smartphone Nature Photography
Tuesday, July 27, 6-7:30 pm
Virtual

Due to the popularity of our Winter Smartphone Nature Photography workshops, we are repeating the topic for Summer! Join Ellen Sears, Yew Dell Volunteer and 30-year classroom instructor in Art and Math, for a workshop focused on getting folks outside to capture beautiful summer images with their smartphones. Ellen will discuss cell phone photography tricks and treatments, and will provide a list of shots for participants to take on their own.

Participants can submit their images to a shared drive for a follow up the Gallery Session on Tuesday, August 10. This gallery session is a great way to get feedback and encouragement to continue exploring this hobby.

This is a virtual workshop, and we will send the Zoom link as the date gets closer.

Summer Workshop Spotlight: Insect Identification
Saturday, July 17, 12 pm-3 pm
In-Person!

Join our Garden and Arboretum Manager, Sayde Heckman, in exploring the insects present in our Kentucky gardens. In this workshop you will learn how to identify a variety of insects and explore what each contributes to your garden. Following the lecture portion, attendees will explore the gardens at Yew Dell in a guided insect identification tour. Attendees will receive two insect identification field guides and a hand lens, which will be utilized throughout the workshop.

Summer Workshop Spotlight: The Other Pollinators
Wednesday, July 14

Learn about the less-familiar birds, beetles, and bats, and their pollination impacts.

For The Other Pollinators, Aaron Sexton, University of Louisville PhD Candidate, will discuss the less familiar birds, beetles, and bats, and their pollination impacts. The Other Pollinators are just as important as the better-known bees and butterflies in keeping our flowering plants flourishing, and they should be included in our safeguarding efforts. Learn who the “Others” are, what they do, and how we can attract and protect them in our gardens.

It’s hard to believe that there were only three trees growing on the farmland that is now Yew Dell when the Klein family first purchased the property in the 1940s. Thanks to their passion for planting trees, the Kleins left us with the most wonderful shade that keeps our gardens cooler in summer.

Eastern Prickly Pear Cactus (𝘖𝘱𝘶𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘧𝘶𝘴𝘢)

#DidYewKnow we have a native cactus in Kentucky? Like most cacti, this species has large, showy flowers. Each flower is open only a single day. However, in a large colony the individual flowering period may last up to a month. You can find this plant blooming in the Sunken Rock Garden. #whatsinbloom
